Membership status
Each membership has a status that reflects its current state. The status is shown on the customer profile in your customer registry.
Status overview
- Active (paid) – the membership is activated, within its valid period, and paid.
- Active (starting grace period) – the membership has just started and is within its starting grace period. The customer is treated as an active member even though payment may not be completed yet.
- Pending – the membership has been created but not yet activated. This can happen when a membership is purchased online and requires manual approval.
- Unpaid – the membership is activated and within its valid period, but not yet paid.
- Ending (grace period) – the membership end date has passed but the customer is still within the grace period. Once the grace period ends, the membership expires.
- Expired – the membership has passed both its end date and grace period. The customer is no longer treated as a member.
- Cancelled – auto-renewal has been disabled. The membership remains active until its end date.
Editing the membership status
Open the customer profile and click the edit icon on the membership. You can:
- Activate or deactivate the membership manually
- Enable or disable auto-renewal
- Change dates (start, end, grace period)
- Change type
You can only edit the payment status if the membership hasn’t been invoiced or paid by card online. To override a card or invoice payment, you need to remove the current payment first.
Auto-renewal and failed payments
If a membership with automatic payment fails to charge the customer’s card, the system:
- Records the failed attempt and increments the retry counter.
- Sends a notification to the customer on the first failure.
- Retries the payment automatically.
- If the maximum number of retries is reached, auto-renewal is disabled and the customer is notified.
See Terminate memberships with automatic payment for how to handle membership cancellations.
