Tips for a successful league game
Running a successful league at your venue takes good planning and communication. Here are some best practices:
Growing your league
- The bigger the league, the better – there are no disadvantages to a large league, only advantages.
- Recruit players actively through email, Facebook, Instagram, and in the hall.
- Use a waiting list – having a queue creates demand and ensures quick replacements.
- League players are your best customers.
Organising divisions
- Start with small divisions (4 or max 6 teams) if you do not know the level of the participants well. Expand as the league grows.
- Find out how good the players are before putting them in a division. Better to have people on a waiting list than at the wrong level.
- Higher divisions often want 90-minute slots. You can mix durations in the same league – for example, divisions 1–4 play 90 minutes and divisions 5–11 play 60 minutes.
Scheduling
- Good match times make happy players, fewer substitutions, and less hassle.
- Provide good and sufficient extra times – unused times are released back to MATCHi at least 48–72 hours in advance, so there is no cost.
- The motto is: better a handful of really good extra times than dozens of half-baked ones. Think about times that players actually want.
Scoring
- Use a scoring system that makes every match meaningful. A recommended setup: always 3 sets (or as far as possible), 2 points per set won, 1.5 points for the lead, 2 games advantage for the lead, 1 point for a tie.
Registration
- Consider receiving entries via MATCHi using Administration > Entries with the form template Seriespel BHS Dubbel incl division affiliation.
- Good and accurate administration is appreciated by both players and venues.
